Cell Block News and Notes: Recuiting Update

  • LA receiver planning a Michigan visit. If he comes to Michigan, his nick name has to be The M Shaq! (ok, I will work on it) Shaquelle Evans 6-foot-2, 200-plus pound receiver, is planning trips to LSU, Michigan, Ohio St. and Tennessee.
  • The recruiting machine known in these parts as "The Vest" picks up another Michigan HS commitment. Tight end Reid Fragel, 6 feet 8, 258 pounds, of Grosse Pointe, Mich., said he has picked the Buckeyes over MSU. Michigan wanted Reid to play Tackle and he wanted to catch the football. The word is, being a great Tackle at Michigan won't get you drafted by the NFL. Wait a second, maybe Reid had that backwards.
  • PSU picks up commitments number 9 and 10. One of those commits was Sean Stanley a DE prospect that Michigan was interested in.
  • Brandon McGee is not close to a decision but by looking at his gear, it looks like OSU is in the lead.
  • Aaron Shea calls it a career.
  • Black Shoe Diaries is calling out the Wolverines early. In the top 5 games he would like to attend he has this to say about Michigan at #2:
Michigan - The streak is going to end this year and in a big way. This game should be a blowout in our favor, and Michigan fans will sound like Charlie Weis telling us to laugh now.
  • ND LB Aaron Nagel (a 4.0 student) decides to transfer to another school not on ND's schedule:
Weis’ policy is not to release players to schools that appear on ND’s upcoming schedules. So that will rule out Purdue, Michigan State and Stanford -- three schools that would have interested Aaron, according to Ron.

Michigan and Ohio State a Rivalry on the Field

You might remember from a recent post about a West Virgina columnist that was looking for any reason to hang out the prodigal son Rich Rodriguez by putting this quote in a recent article: "The No. 1 uniform meant a lot to Edwards. It has belonged exclusively to a wide receiver since 1979, dating back to Chris Carter"

I made fun of the columnist and wondered how he could ever think Cris Carter played for Michigan when he actually played for Michigan's rival Ohio State. Well something ironic happened on the way to funny store.

I was watching NFL live last night on ESPN, when they started talking about PacMan Jones (formerly of WVU) wanting to wear number 21 because his mentor/idol Deion Sanders wore it for the Cowboys. Then the NFL Live crew went around the table and started to name thier mentors. Cris Carter the newest member to the NFL staff at ESPN said Mike Quick and Anthony Carter.

What? A Michigan Man and an Ohio State Man friends and mentors? How can this be? I will tell you how! It's not about hating the other team or state, it's about respect for the players and for the game. This gets lost by many fans and from my experience, OSU fans have the hardest time with this. (BTW: I know there are many Michigan fans that are just as bad, but my experience tells me that OSU fans take this rivalry to extremes more often).

Bo and Woody coached together, (in fact Woody crawled out of his death bed to honor Bo in Dayton, gave his speech about Bo and went home and died. Bo did his interview for HBO's Documentary and died a day before The GAME #1 vs #2) and CC and AC are friends. I'm sure there are many more examples.

This rivalry is not about hate, it's about respecting the game and the opportunity to play in it.

Well all should take a lesson from Cris and Anthony.

Cell Block News and Notes: Holiday Hangover

  • Michigan has an offer on the table to Chris Bonds a highly recruited DE that blew out his ACL in his junior year and is about 80% on that knee right now.
Bonds went to South Carolina as an unofficial visit, saving his official ones for places like Southern Cal, Alabama and those two “Northern” schools.“Here(USC), Southern Cal and Alabama were three of the best places I’ve visited,” he said. “The schools I wanted to visit are technical schools like Georgia Tech, that still have good football. But definitely Michigan and Notre Dame. Those are
the two I’m anxious to visit.”
  • Ryan Cheek an Ohio LB turns down offers from EMU, Cincinnati, and others to head to NC State.

  • U of M Baseball makes the NCAA regionals and will host the games in A2.

  • Angelique S. Chengelis of the Detroit News agrees with me that Michigan needs to reconigize thier Heisman Trophy winners in the new stadium or by retrieing the numbers. After some thought, I prefer the ring of honor then the retiring of numbers.
    Heisman to Heisman:
A little more than a week ago, while attending the Brian Griese /Steve Hutchinson golf outing at U-M, I was standing with former Michigan Heisman Trophy winner Desmond Howard when another former Michigan Heisman Trophy winner, Charles Woodson , walked into the clubhouse.
"There's Mr. Heisman Trophy," Howard said, as he greeted Woodson.
Woodson briefly made the Heisman pose. And at that moment, it hit me that people who follow Michigan football know who the Wolverines' Heisman Trophy winners are, but as much as Michigan strives to not promote players for individual awards, the school does little, if anything, to give the winners of college football's biggest individual prize their permanent moment in the sun.
As Michigan proceeds with its renovation of Michigan Stadium and the addition of luxury suites, it's time for the school to seriously consider how it can best recognize the players who delivered greatness to the program.
Some stadiums have a "ring of honor" that features retired jersey numbers and the names of the players who wore them into retirement. Not saying that's something that can or should be done at Michigan Stadium, but why not honor the retired numbers? And how about statues or busts of the Heisman Trophy winners -- Howard, Woodson and Tom Harmon?

Cell Block News and Notes: Holiday Weekend Edition

  • Defensive End is a huge need for Michigan in the class of 2009. It's basically a position that Michigan has whiffed on in the last two classes. Here is a link for Kedrick Johnson, one of Michigan's prospects for that position. Of course everyone and their brother is looking at him as well.
  • We all knew Scot Loeffler was a good coach and hoped Coach Rod would keep him. That didn't happen but he ended up with the Lions and has been making a good impression so far.
  • Michael Shaw's HS athletic career is over. He was found not to be a resident of Trotwood, Ohio and can no longer compete in track this spring. The following statement were a little shocking to me, but I guess sometimes you forget what type of backgrounds these kids come from.
In a conversation with an investigator hired by the OHSAA, Shaw's father was unable to remember the name of the Trotwood trailer court at which he was paying rent for himself and his son. In a Feb. 12 interview with the OHSAA's investigator, the trailer park owner indicated that the Shaws did not reside there after being evicted and that rent had not been paid for three months. He also said there had been no electric use at the site the past "three or four" months. There was no electric usage for June, July and August of 2007.
  • Former Michigan verbal commit and every other college in the US verbal commit, Jeremy Fitch a 4 star safety that played at Florida last year and broke his leg in a game has now decided to transfer to IU. The word was that Jeremy wasn't exactly hitting the books at Florida, I hope he understands that it won't be any easier at IU.
  • Is David Terrell trying for another comeback or is this someone totally different? I don't know of undrafted rookies from Michigan named Darnell Terrell:
The Browns also have a number of undrafted rookie CBs in camp. Mil'von James of UNLV, Damon Jenkins of of Fresno State, Gerard Lawson of Oregon State, and Darnell Terrell of Michigan are all in camp with the Brownies this summer.

Separated at Birth? Jason Forcier and............

Jason Forcier - potential starting QB for Stanford and Michigan transfer.

Cell Block Thursday: Slow Day = Link Factory

  • An ESPN.com article on Michigan commit Isaiah Bell.
Bell didn't wait long and jumped at the University of Michigan, a gutsy pick for a kid from Ohio. When asked why, he said "I really felt comfortable there and I have a chance to play early. I am impressed with Coach [Rich] Rodriguez and secondary coach Tony Gibson."
  • Stewart Madel from SI.com. Rips WVU in his "Mailbag" secton:
I'm sorry to be the bearer of bad news, but West Virginia's run as a national power is likely down to its last days. As I wrote at the time, Stewart's hiring was a foolishly impulsive decision made by an already suspect set of West Virginia administrators still high off the emotional Fiesta Bowl win just hours earlier. They took a now-nationally prominent program and put it in the hands of a guy whose only head coaching experience was a three-year, 8-25 stint at VMI that ended in his resignation over the use of a racial slur; and a guy who, of the nine assistants on West Virginia's staff, was the only one Rodriguez did not feel compelled to offer a job at Michigan.

Where in the World is Sam Sword? and Nichol likes MSU for the Second Time

  • Sam Sword what are you doing now? As you know Sam was a standout at Michigan and played 4 seasons in the NFL (3 with the Colts and 1 with the Raiders). Well he is the Palm Coast (FL) recreation supervisor.

Sam Sword, a city recreation supervisor who played football at the University of Michigan and in the NFL, said preregistration was slow early in the week but the number of participants nearly doubled when youngsters showed up with parents on the day of the meet.

  • Former Michigan HS standout QB Keith Nichol decides to transfer to MSU after leaving Oklahoma a few weeks ago. If your wondering why Keith wasn't perused by Michigan. It's because they have one QB coming in this fall and 2 other highly rated QB's coming in for the class of 2009, the year Keith would be eligible to play. Keith's 3 years of eligibility when the Freshmen had 4 or maybe 5 (with a redshirt) didn't make much sense. He was about a month late in his decision if he wanted to wear the Maize and Blue.

  • This ND site is forecasting win and losses for the "Domers". Here is what they had to say about Michigan. On a side note: I personally love that nobody knows what Michigan will have next year. In the past 40 years, we always knew what Michigan had!

Michigan (Toss Up) – Before anyone says how is this game a toss up considering the Wolverines beat the Irish 38-0 last year, remember that Michigan will be breaking in new offensive and defensive systems and will have a quarterback who doesn’t exactly fit Rich Rodriquez’s system. They also lost 11 starters including three offensive linemen. This game will be at home for Notre Dame and the last time Michigan beat Notre Dame 38-0 in Ann Arbor, the Irish upset the Wolverines the following year in South Bend. (by the way they are forecasting a loss vs MSU)
  • Dennis Thames is the Cousin of Detroit Tigers outfielder and is most likely going to stay close to home in Mississippi, but will seriously look at Michigan.
One school that Thames is looking forward to visiting in particular is Michigan.
"They are a big school and I like the new spread offense they are gonna run," he said. "I think I'd fit in really well in their offense and I'd love to to play receiver for them. They've talked about both offense and defense, so we'll see."

Michigan to sport new technology in their famous helmets

Michigan has changed it's uniform supplier from Nike to Adidas and now is changing their technology in their famous winged helmets.

Michigan's new helmets will be the new AiR XP™ from Schutt Sports, one of the most anticipated new helmets in years. The AiR XP™ is a traditional helmet shell shape that also packs TPU Cushioning. According to test results from independent research labs, the AiR XP™ absorbs up to 37% more impact than a Riddell® VSR-4 in game-like conditions. As opposed to the foam padding found in older traditional helmets.

We've been overwhelmed by the demand for this helmet," says Mark Watts, Regional Sales Manager for Schutt Sports. "I've been here 18 years and have never seen reaction to a helmet like this. The NFL® teams are eating it up, as are the major college programs. We're sending them out the door as fast we can make them."

Colleges that have lined up heavily with the AiR XP™ already include: USC, Michigan, Georgia, Tennessee, Air Force, Stanford, SMU, Oklahoma State, Boston College, Illinois, BYU, Texas A&M, South Florida, TCU, Kentucky and Wyoming. More are on the way, as sales indicators at the Division 1 level are overwhelming.

Side Notes:
  • Michael Shaw an incoming Freshmen (Slot or RB) this summer is in a residency legal battle over where he lives and goes to school. Ohio High School Athletic Association sent a letter to Shaw, ruling him ineligible to participate in interscholastic athletics events. The issue at hand is whether Shaw is a residence of Trotwood. Michael is a track star and wants to continue running track this spring.

Michigan has two games in the top BCS games of all time!

3 posts today! Can you tell I needed a Michigan football fix? :-)

Michigan has 2 games in the top 10 BCS games ever, rated by ESPN. I have to agree with the rankings, both of these games were great!

4. 2005 Rose Bowl: Texas 38, Michigan 37

It's a game that introduced the nation to Vince Young's brilliance and also helped change the way the BCS standings were computed. Some wondered whether Texas even deserved to be playing in the Rose Bowl after the Longhorns passed California in the final BCS standings. Texas coach Mack Brown did his share of lobbying along the way. As it turns out, it's a good thing he did. The game was a classic between two storied programs meeting for the first time and wasn't decided until Texas' Dusty Mangum kicked a 37-yard field goal as time expired. Young had a hand in all five Texas touchdowns and led the Longhorns down the field for the game-winning field goal. His counterpart, Michigan freshman quarterback Chad Henne, was equally spectacular and tied a Rose Bowl record with four touchdown passes, three to All-America receiver Braylon Edwards. It was back and forth the whole way, and whoever had the ball last was going to win. After two years of controversy, The Associated Press asked that its poll no longer be used as a component in the BCS standings and was replaced by the Harris poll.

7. 2000 Orange Bowl: Michigan 35, Alabama 34, OT

It's a game that provided a glimpse of the NFL greatness that would follow for Michigan QB Tom Brady, who passed for 369 yards and four touchdowns. Alabama, led by SEC Player of the Year Shaun Alexander, jumped out to a 14-0 lead. But Michigan kept hanging around and kept clawing back, usually thanks to a big play from receiver David Terrell, who had 10 catches for 150 yards and three touchdowns. Michigan had a couple of chances to win the game in the fourth quarter, but regulation ended in a 28-28 tie. Tailback Anthony Thomas lost a fumble at the goal line early in the fourth quarter that was recovered in the end zone by Alabama. Then at the end of regulation, Hayden Epstein's 36-yard field-goal attempt was blocked by Phillip Weeks as time expired. In overtime, Brady hit tight end Shawn Thompson on the first play with a 25-yard touchdown pass. Alabama came right back with a 21-yard touchdown pass from Andrew Zow to Antonio Carter, but the extra point attempt by Ryan Pflugner was pushed wide right in a stunning end to the thriller.

This one from The M Zone. No need to do an introduction to The Big Ten Commissioner's Wikipedia page. (yes, it has been fixed. Very funny stuff).

Braylon says the #1 Tradition is Safe

Like, I predicted Braylon spoke to Coach Rod this weekend at the Brian Griese-Steve Hutchinson "Champions for Children's Hearts" golf tournament and dinner and fixed the "whole #1 Tradition" issue.

"Hell yeah, it's important," Edwards said of who wears No. 1. "It's important because it's tradition. You don't break tradition. I don't care who you are or what school it is, you don't break tradition.

"You could come in here and completely revamp everything, change the coaching staff, you could change the uniforms, change a lot of stuff, but you don't change tradition. The No. 1 is one of our oldest, most storied traditions here -- don't change it."

That must have been one good BBQ!

As you know, Michigan had an JR. day this weekend called the "Barbecue at the BigHouse" where they brought some 25+ High School Juniors to Ann Arbor to visit the University.

The good news is Michigan picked up it's 8th commit, a highly ranked WR from Minnesota, Bryce McNeal. Bryce is a 4 star recruit and ranked in the top 100 in the class of 2009.

Here's the particulars on Bryce from Varsity Blue:

Recruiting Notes:
Michigan fans started following Bryce McNeal's recruitment heavily when he was offered the weekend of St. Patrick's Day. He originally said he had planned to announce his decision at the Army All-American game, to which he has been invited, but the opportunity at Michigan was too much for him to pass up. McNeal visited Michigan on Monday, March 24th on his way home from the Akron 7-on-7 camp. On March 25th, he told GopherHole that he had a Top-5, but the only schools that he was going to reveal from it were Michigan and Minnesota. At this time, it was assumed that Michigan was his leader, with Minnesota in second. Though he didn't manage to make it to Ann Arbor for Michigan's spring game, he had planned to visit the next weekend (which also fell through). McNeal visited for the BBQ at the Big House junior day, and committed. He planned a visit to Clemson next week, but that has since been canceled.

Player Notes:
In 2007 he had 33 receptions for 670 yards and 8 touchdowns at Breck high school, where the base offense was a version of the spread that he will be running at Michigan. He has also gotten some attention for track, but it is unknown whether he will try to compete in both sports in college. He is a speedster with good hands, though he will have to add some muscle to compete at the Division-I level. McNeal was invited to attend the Army National Junior Combine in January, where was named to the all-combine first team. Despite this acclaim, he was listed as a three-star player on both sites, but his ranking went up to more reasonable levels after the latest round of re-rankings from each site.

  • Here is what Coach Rod had to say about the BBQ this weekend:
“Our feeling is if we can get a young man on campus, we have a great shot to get him because it’s such a great place,” he said. “So anytime we can bring them on campus for an event like that helps us.”

That's what we need - More Bowl Games!

This is pretty old news but I just ran across it. Did you know that we are going to have two more bowls to enjoy next year? Yes, I know - you can hardly wait.

First off is the brand new: St. Petersburg Bowl (which sounds more like a cheer leading event on ESPN then a bowl game) will be played at the Tampa Bays Devil Ray's Tropicana Field. The game will feature teams from the Big East and Conference USA. Boy, this could be a similar match up to the exciting International Bowl played in Toronto. Get your tickets now!

Next is the Congressional Bowl in Washington DC which will pit Navy vs an ACC opponent. Yes NAVY already has a spot guaranteed in a bowl. What luck! Why even play the regular season games? Oh right, sorry Notre Dame I understand. In related news, there has been some talk of changing the name of this game to the Paul Johnson Bowl, but those rumors have not been verified. A committee member of the Congressional Bowl was quoted as saying, "Changing the name to the The Paul Johnson Bowl was never an option. But it was a Triple Option"

The last bit of news to get you excited about College Football's post season is the legendary Cotton Bowl is doing it's part to kill the News Years Day tradition by moving it's game to the afternoon of January 2nd. Not sure why they didn't want to keep that 10am spot on January 1? They will also move the game to the Cowboys new stadium in 2010. So the Orange Bowl isn't played in the Orange Bowl and the Cotton Bowl isn't' played in the Cotton Bowl. This reporter has also been told that the The Rose Bowl is negotiations with the Indianapolis Colts new stadium management. The Big Ten is very happy on how the talks are progressing.

Jon Tenuta a Wolverine?

Don't you just love when journalists make mistakes. Last week, a WVU newspaper said that RR had messed up the #1 jersey tradition at Michigan which dates back to Chris Carter (Anthony Carter!) wearing it for the Maize and Blue.
The No. 1 uniform meant a lot to Edwards. It has belonged exclusively to a wide receiver since 1979, dating back to Chris Carter.

Now The Bleacher Report says that Jon Tenuta left GT for the same position at U of M in their GT preview.
Blitzing guru Jon Tenuta, widely regarded as one of the top defensive minds in college football, left his defensive coordinator post to take the same position at Michigan.

  • The Big Ten is considering a two week "summer" dead period for recruiting. (in a related story - the Big Ten Network continues it's dead period in most "cable" homes in Michigan and Ohio.) Michigan Man Joe Tiller chimes in:

"We've gone to a policy where three coaches have to be in the office at all times," Purdue coach Joe Tiller said Wednesday. "God forbid you're not there when you've got a pretty good prospect and his parents standing outside the door. A dead period means no body's going to drift into your office.

"We always talk about quality of life and assistant coaches and the ability for them and for us to get away and recharge our batteries, totally get away from the sport, but we can never get away from the sport because of year-round recruiting. [The proposal] would make a difference." I would also like to add that Michigan is evil and their dead period should last at least 6 weeks. (ok, I added that last part).

  • Remember Chris Perry? His NFL career has read more like a medical chart then a trading card. He is now back in Bengals camp and looking good so far. Let's keep our fingers crossed that he will be healthy this year and play well.
  • IU signs a new deal with Adidas for 8 years $21 Million.
  • Minnesota WR is one of over 25 high school juniors that will visit Ann Arbor this weekend for the "Barbecue at the Big House". This is Michigan's version of Junior Day where a bunch of top recruits for the class of 2009 will visit U of M this weekend.

New WR offered and RR Deposition

  • Michigan has offered 6'2 188lbs WR Jamal Patterson.
Patterson said he plans to give the Michigan offer strong consideration.“Distance from home isn’t a factor,” Patterson said. “It such an honor to receive an offer from Michigan. “Getting an offer from any school is an honor, but one from a school with that much prestige is big time.”
  • RR's deposition was released yesterday. Not a ton of new information. Some interesting tidbits: Arkansas came calling for RR's services and was quickly dismissed as was Kentucky a few years ago. Bill Martin also met with RR's team in Toledo a couple days before the infamous 12/14 meeting.
  • Michigan - Illinois game will be at 3:30 on ABC.
  • James Jackson, a speedy Michigan WR verbally commits to OSU.
  • The Big Ten doesn't exactly have the best non-conference schedule, in fact it's the worst. 29% of the Big Ten's non-conference games are against BCS schools compared to 48% for the ACC and 45% for the PAC 10.

Who's to blame for Maurice Clarrett and Mike Williams?

As we know 95% of the blame has to rest on each one of their shoulders. They were arguably the two best underclassmen in college football in 2003.

Both had dreams of playing for NFL teams and both wanted to get there a little bit earlier then their peers. After a Judge overturned the ruling allowing players with less then 3 years out of high school to enter the NFL draft, both of these guys lives spiraled out of control. They both got to spend the 2004 year without football. NFL scouts have long memories and both of thier careers got off to a great start. In the 2005 NFL Draft the Detroit Lions picked Mike Williams with their first round draft pick and Mike Shanahan from the Denver Broncos surprised everyone and picked Maurice in the 3rd round.

As we all know this is story does not turn out well, Maurice reports fat and gets cut and then turns to a life of crime. He is now spending time in a different "Big House". Mike who didn't turn to crime, but must have turned to "Dunkin Donuts" because he continued to have a weight problems as a Lion and regularly under preformed before he got shipped out to the Raiders in a draft day trade in 2007. Mike didn't last long as a Raider getting cut after dropping a 4th down ball. He then got picked up on Thanksgiving by the Titans and didn't catch a pass the last two games of the season. At season end, Mike weighed more then 270 pounds and was told by the Jeff Fisher to lose some weight or get cut again. He is now down 30 pounds and trying one last time in Titans camp.

So there's the re-cap, but how did this happen? Both of these guys were on the path to NFL fame and glory. Looking back at what happened, that year off killed both of their careers. See these boys played Football their entire life, they didn't know what to do with themselves after that was taken away from them. I think Maurice was a bad egg from the beginning but I believe the NCAA could have treated Mike and maybe Maurice differently and given them back their amateur status for a year (if they paid back any money they got from their agents, etc). If they were allowed to go back to OSU and USC, today their lives might be different. But the NCAA stuck by their guns at let both of these guys sit for a year.

Looking back, was it worth it? Instead of sending a message, they destroyed both of these guys lives. Now, I understand that both are to blame for getting fat, drinking too much and running with the wrong crowd. Would they have done that if they were playing football full time? Maybe - Maybe not. Today the NCAA will allow students that graduate to transfer without penalty, maybe they should have considered a special rule back in 2004 to save the lives of two young football players. Maybe Mike Williams has learned a lesson and can make a big comeback this year. The ship has sailed for Maurice. A 2nd chance and a scholarship is a terrible thing to waste.

Michigan's QB Depth Chart 2009 - Remember when Michigan had a QB problem?

It only seemed like weeks ago Michigan had serious holes at the QB position? Well, your right and it was. Many of us wondered how a program that has put so many QB's in the NFL could be out of quality QB's so quickly. Well, things have changed and changed quickly for the Wolverines at quarterback starting in 2009. Let's take a look at a possible depth chart at QB for the 2009 Season.
Flash Forward: QB Depth Chart Fall 2009:
Probable Starter: Steven Threet. He will have a year under his belt running "The West Rod Offense". This spot all depends how he preforms in the 2008 season, but if he does well he will be looking good for this role in 2009.

Co-starter: Justin Feagins, will get some snaps and might fill a "Tim Tebow" role as a Freshmen QB in 2008 (who as of right now hasn't stepped on campus yet). It will depend on how quickly he picks up the play book and whether or not he is a true D1 QB or not.

First Backup: Kevin Newsome. Reports are that Kevin is considering graduating early and heading up to A2 around Bowl preparation time. Having Bowl Prep and Spring Ball will give Kevin a real shot at starting if Threet and Feagins have a poor 2008 campaign. Look for this 5 star QB to make a huge push for the starting spot in 2009.

Second backup: Shavodrick Beaver. If this is how the depth chart falls, look for "the Beaver" to get red-shirted as a Freshmen. There is no reason to waste a year of eligibility on a guy that is 4th on the depth chart and has a high upside. Remember Newsome could have a 7-8 month advantage on him in the system and with Barwis.

Cut or changed positions: Nick Sheridan and David Cone. Nick has been said to be close to getting the starting job this year. I believe Feagins will be more athletic and drop him down to 3rd on the depth chart in 2008. With these high profile guys coming in he should look for a position change or just ride out his time as a Wolverine. David doesn't have much shot at playing this year or ever.

Potential QB's still in the mix: Oklahoma Transfer and former Michigan HS standout Keith Nichol is looking for a new school and many believe Michigan is the proper destination. An Oklahoma blog even suggests it. At one time Keith was a Michigan State commit and then changed his mind after John L. was shown the door. He is known as a dual threat guy with allot of athleticism, but with the possible depth chart above, where would he fit? He also couldn't really break through in Oklahoma, so I'm not sure Michigan is ready to use a spot on him at this point. If he had only transferred a month earlier!

One of the "paid" recruiting services are saying that Tate Forcier is still considering coming to Michigan. He has a bunch of good offers from very high profile schools and he is still considering Michigan. As you know Tate's brother was a QB at Michigan before he transferred to Stanford last year. I would be very surprised if Tate came in and wanted to compete against Threet, Newsome, Feagins, and Beaver. But he might!

The QB situation for the near future could be a little scary as these kids get some experience, but I like the depth we have for the next 4-5 years!

Now let's go get some Defensive Ends and some 4 star Offensive Linemen!

Oklahoma QB is going to Transfer

Former Michigan High School standout Keith Nichol is planning on transferring from Oklahoma to a new school. At one point, Nichol had verbally committed to attend MSU but changed his mind after their coaching change.

For those that are wondering, yes he would be a good fit for Michigan's offense, but we might not have a spot for him with one freshmen QB coming in this fall and two others committed to attending Michigan next year.

On a side note, Rivals is reporting that QB Tate Forcier is still considering attending Michigan. Which is very interesting, since we have the for mentioned 2 QB commits already for the class of 2009.

We need a new Bob Ufer

The Michigan Football program is going through some major changes this year. We have a brand new coach from "outside" the family, a new offensive systems that gets 100% away from Bo's "three yards and a cloud of dust" philosophy. The Big House is going luxury, along with some much needed improvements to the bathrooms and better access for disabled fans.

So what are some other changes need to be made? We need a guy in the radio booth that lives and dies for Michigan football just like the days of when legendary Bob Ufer held that seat. You can't walk through a Michigan tailgate area with out the sounds of Bob's voice filling the Saturday air with excitement and joy from a memory of a Michigan win long ago. We need that feeling again and we need it every Saturday during the Fall.

Times have changed and announcers have be non-partisan and call the game as it's played out. I call BS on that. I want a guy in the booth, that cries when Michigan loses a heart breaker or starts throwing chairs out the window when the MSU time keeper gives the Spartans another chance. Bob Ufer was one of a kind, his joy for Michigan football can't be matched. Or can it? See Bob wasn't a professional announcer, he was actually an Insurance Salesmen that announced Michigan football games. Maybe that's the ticket, professional announcers are now way too tight and non-partisan. Let's do an open tryout and let: auto workers, policemen, IT guys, anyone with a good speaking voice and the ability to show listener the love he or she has for Wolverine football.

If you want to get a feel for Bob in his prime, hit the right side bar for the best play ever. This is what I'm looking for. If that video doesn't give you chills then your not a true Michigan fan. In a day where we have high definition everything, Big Ten Networks, and thousands of cable channels, sports commentary has become dry and all most un-listenable. We need a new Bob Ufer to give us more moments like Wranger to Carter. We need things like this to re-polish the tradition and mystique of Michigan Football. The time is now!

New ACL Surgery Could Help Athletes

ACL injuries seem to have become the norm in watching sports these days. Anytime a player goes down or falls awkwardly we know he or she probably inquired their ACL. It even cost Dennis Dixon of Oregon the Heisman Trophy last year. I believe Florida State's WR Cody Fagg tore his at the NFL Combine in Indy this year. (talk about bad luck)

There are more then 200,000 ACL tears in the US every year to mostly people participating in soccer or football between the ages of 15-25. I personally have a family member and a good friend who had their surgeries in their 30's.

The common ACL surgery reconstructs one bundle of the injured knee ligament. The new procedure now reconstructs both bundles of the ligament. The new procedure leaves the structures in a more natural position for more stability and could potentially prevent arthritis in the knee. There are two doctors doing this procedure at the Henry Ford Hospital in Novi who have preformed 25 of these since February and expect to do at least a 100 by the end of the year.

"(The surgery) is more demanding, and there is more risk ... but this is creating anatomy in a better way and it makes sense to more people," Kolowich said. "The trend is very favorable ... we are hopeful, but ongoing research is necessary."

The surgery has been done in other countries for about 10 years and has been studied in the U.S. since 2001, Perkins said. There are no conclusive studies yet, although early reports are encouraging, she said.

"We feel in five years or 10 years this will be the standard," said Dr. Thomas Perkins, who works with Dr. John Samani on the new procedure at the Michigan Knee and Shoulder Institute in Auburn Hills. "Double-bundle reconstruction is like a custom rebuild, more closely restoring the patient's ACL to the way it was before the injury," Perkins said. "By doing so, we are optimistic we can give athletes a knee that feels more like it did before the injury while hopefully preventing the devastating consequence of arthritis down the road."

Mike DeBord still makes me laugh

  • This is a regular off season article on the Seahawks coaching staff getting familiar with the players and each other. Lots of fluff with one very funny statement:
Solari's assistant line coach, Mike DeBord, is also a former offensive coordinator. He spent the past three seasons in that capacity at the University of Michigan, but joined the Seahawks because he wants to work in the NFL.
Because he wanted to work in the NFL? Are you freaking kidding me, it's because he didn't get retained by the new coaching staff, or a better way of putting it - got fired. He is working in the NFL because I'm sure someone owed Lloyd Carr a favor and he needed a job. He took the best Tackle Michigan has ever had, a 2nd round NFL QB, a drafted running back, and two drafted WR's and turned them into the "most predicable show on earth". That is why he is in the NFL!
  • Some of you might remember radio personality for Detroit's WJR Chuck Swirsky. Chuck did play-by-play for both Michigan basketball and football in the mid 90's. I'm sure you all have been staying up late wondering where he went and what he is doing now. Well, Chuck got deported (not really) to Canada to be the Raptors play by play guy. He has now taken a new job to be the play by play guy for the Chicago Bulls. If you remember, Chuck had a famous take that was caught on tape "on how much he loved Chicago and wished the Big Ten Championship game would be hosted there every year". Detroit and Chicago was a pretty heated NBA rivalry back in those days and Chuck quickly got sent to Toronto. Chuck your back where you belong.

Braylon is still #1 in our Hearts!

Pro Bowl Cleveland Browns Wide Receiver and former Wolverine great Braylon Edwards is not happy about his old #1 jersey. As we all know, the Wolverines have a long tradition where Michigan's best receiver wears the #1 jersey. The Tradition goes back to the great Anthony Carter, (if you want to know who AC is, check out the side panel for the video of the best play ever!).

As we know Braylon wore that number at Michigan along with many others. Braylon in fact has a 1/2 a million dollar scholarship fund for the jersey. So what's the problem?

Braylon has been going on national radio shows and saying that Coach Rod has promised the #1 jersey to an incoming freshmen defensive back JT Floyd and Braylon isn't happy. I agree with Braylon and maybe Coach Rod didn't know or understand the tradition. I'm sure this can be resolved with a quick phone call from Braylon.

Speaking of tradition: It's time Michigan started to retire numbers or at least give some type of recognition to Michigan's great former players. I would like to see the Heisman trophy winners numbers retired, not sure what number Tom Harmon wore, but #21 for Desmond Howard, and #2 for Charles Woodson should be considered for retirement.

Cell Block News and Notes: Tuesday

  • BTN close to a deal with Comcast but not Time Warner. Can you say Direct TV? The Big Ten Network currently reaches 30 million homes, a significant number for a fledgling channel, Ourand said. “Everybody views the Big Ten Network as having a lot of distribution challenges, because it wasn’t able to get a deal done with Comcast and Time Warner in the first year of existence,’’ Ourand said. “It’s in more than 30 million homes. By any measure in terms of cable TV, that’s a resounding success.’’
The Big Ten and Time Warner, another major cable carrier, are apparently not close to a deal, Ourand said. Other cable carriers, such as Mediacom, may follow with a deal after Comcast made the first move.
  • Remember Safety recruit Jeremy Finch? He commited to Michigan, then de-committed to attend Indiana (gentlemen's agreement?) then officially signed with Urban Meyer at Florida. Well, Jeremy has been busy on and off the field since then. His freshman year didn't go so well, he was moved to LB when he blew out his knee returning an INT. in the Tennessee game. He also wasn't busy enough in the class room and recently got his release to leave the Gators. The rumor says he plans to transfer to IU, not sure his grades are good enough to transfer to IU.
  • Allan Iverson would have been a perfect fit at Michigan - since it seems The Michigan basketball program doesn't ever practice. How could they? They never had anywhere to? Now Bill Martin says, they have enough money for a new practice facility. The rumor that a wreaking ball used for the new luxury boxes at the Big House accidentally hit Crisler Arena was found to be false. In other news, Crisler Arena is old and terrible and needs to be knocked down.

Taylor Bennet Plays and Ryan Sits

This is a story from AOL Fanhouse from Brian at Mgoblog with some of my takes:

Both Taylor Bennet and Ryan Mallet were "victims" of a coaching change as starting QB's at their respective schools; Georgia Tech and Michigan. Both decided to transfer because their new coaches systems didn't fit their style of play. (on the ironic side of this story - Steven Threet Michigan's most likely starter next year, was a Michigan HS QB that enrolled early at Tech and even before fall ball started transferred to Michigan to sit/play behind 5 Star recruit Ryan Mallet - now Mallet is gone (so is Bennet), and Steven finds himself as Michigan's starter. He also has the pleasure of welcoming another 5 Star recruit in next year - Kevin Newsome.)

Taylor transferred to Louisiana Tech (yes they are D1) and Ryan transferred to Arkansas. Either one could have transferred to Youngstown State or Delaware (any D1A or D2 school) and played right away. Taylor happens to have one year of eligibility left and Ryan has 3 years.

Ryan as you know filed for an appeal to play right away. The NCAA said, "are you freaking kidding me - No way!". Taylor used a "special rule" and is eligible to play next year.

I'm sure your going through a number of emotions right now, like "WTF how can that happen?".

Brian puts it nicely in his post:
Well, remember that one year the NCAA allowed anyone who'd picked up an undergraduate degree to transfer without penalty? Yeah, that rule was repealed after coaches complained, but by "repealed" we mean "not repealed."

[Myles] Brand and the NCAA created a workaround. The waiver process Bennett used to be able to play at Louisiana Tech has been used successfully by about 30 Division I athletes since July 1, 2007, NCAA spokesman Erik Christianson told me. That's actually more than took advantage of the graduate student transfer rule in the one year for which it applied. "For any individual who has legitimate academic reasons to transfer after graduating, we will grant it," Brand said.

So to break it down BHB style: Have a year of eligibility left, graduate, don't have NFL skills (yet), have a reason why you don't want to play at your current school (coaching change or you sort of suck and they don't want you anymore), transfer to a new D1 school, enroll in graduate classes and play right away.

In another ironic twist, Ryan Mundy was a "not very good" Michigan Safety two years ago. He had enough credits to graduate and wanted to play his final year at Michigan. Coach Carr, said "Thanks but no thanks" and let Ryan be on his way to a successful business career as a Michigan grad. Hold the phone everyone! He transferred to West Virgina enrolled in graduate classes, played for Coach Rod, got faster and stronger via Mike Barwis, had a pretty good year and just got drafted by the NFL. I would say Ryan supports this rule. (Ryan Mundy that is).

The NCAA is a complicated beast, if you ever come across it, don't look directly into it's eyes. It might bite you or help you.

Now if they only could fix that D1 football playoff problem.

Cell Block News and Notes: Henne Struggles and Recruiting Updates

  • Chad Henne struggled in day 4 of The Dolphins mini camp (after 3 good days) mostly due to mental overload trying to learn a brand new 150 page play book in 4 days. At times he was over throwing his WR's and forgetting the snap count. "It's tough as a quarterback; you have to know what everybody is doing, know your checks, where your progressions are, your footwork," Henne said. "Once I get back here again I'll feel more comfortable and do better." "We threw a lot at [Henne]," coach Tony Sparano said. "We wanted to see exactly how much sticks. He might've struggled just a little bit, but I thought he threw the ball pretty well at times."

  • Recruiting Update: Michigan last week offered ATH Davis Sims (6-0, 208) and WR Alshon Jeffrey (6-3, 217) of Calhoun County. Both also have offers from USC, Alabama, North Carolina, Tennessee and N.C. State. Sims' other offers are Georgia Tech, Wake Forest and Colorado. The other offers for Jeffrey are Kentucky, Southern Cal, Florida and Florida State. Coaches from USC, Florida State, North Carolina, Michigan and Virginia visited last week.

  • Varsity Blue: Ranks the Big Ten Recruiting for the Class of 2009: 1) OSU with 13 commits (many 4 & 5 stars) 2) Michigan with 7 commits (two 5* and three 4*) 3) MSU with 6 commits (three 4*) 4) Illinois 2 commits both 4* 5) Minnesota 4 commits and one 4* 6) PSU three commits- no 4* 7) Wisconsin 3 Commits (one 4*) 8) Northwestern - 2 commits (No 4*) 9) Iowa - 1 commit (No 4*) 10) and 11) Purdue and IU - 0 commits.

That is one old Nut and That Jacket doesn't fit like it used to: Buckeye John and Jacket Man Turn 40!

Yes, that's right both Buckeye John and Jacket Man turned 40 in the last week. As you know, both have been contributors to BHB. Here is their wish list for their 40th year on earth:

Buckeye John wants:

  • An in-state rival for his Buckeyes - his first choice is The Cincinnati Bearcats.

  • Every Boren from the state of Ohio to play for the "Vest" (they must have a sister right?)

  • That Terrelle Pryor is more like Michael Vick then Xavier Lee.

  • That if OSU has another one less season that it doesn't come in the last game of Bowl Season.

  • Maybe another 1/2 inch on his new Titleist Irons, but were still not sure yet.

Jacket Man wants:

  • Tech's new triple option offense to confuse ACC defenses.

  • Similar to Michigan - To have his good players stay on the team and not transfer to other schools.

  • For Calvin Johnson to go to the pro bowl next year. (I'm pretty sure an autograph photo of Calvin would work as well).

  • For Chain Gailey Kansas City Chief's Offensive to average 6 points a game next year.

  • A custom-made fly rod.

Sorry Ryan - maybe you can practice your snaps on the sideline!

ESPN is reporting that the "hail mary" appeal Arkansas made to the NCAA to get Ryan Mallet eligible next year has been denied.

As you might imagine this comes as no surprise because approving Ryan's request would open the flood gates to every player that has a problem with their coach or with a coaching change every year. Arkansas had zero chance of getting this approved.

On a side note Casey Dick will be the starter this year at QB. Feel free to insert jokes here.

No Plus 1 in College Football

I have to wonder what the BCS commissioners are thinking. Yesterday they shot down the +1 proposal where number 1 would play #4, and #2 would play #3 in the traditional BCS Bowls. The winners would play a week later. For some reason that proposal had too many holes in it and the commissioners shot it down. No real reasons were given why.

This is ridiculous. They didn't want to add more excitement to College football? They enjoy controversy? The have a problem at doing what most of America wants? They enjoy watching Ohio State get beat by 21 points each year?

What gives? Auburn, USC, Georgia, and even Michigan have had a legitimate beef on not making it to the Big Game in the past few years.

This plan would keep all the Bowl Games and yes there still could be Bowl games in Detroit and Toronto. Why wasn't this proposal considered more closely. Maybe it goes to the intelligence of the commissioners. Here is a quote from ND athletic director Kevin White on why they didn't do the +1 game. "If it isn't broke," White said, "don't fix it."

Wow, I guess these guys just don't get it. I wonder what Kevin would say if a one loss ND team got passed over for the National Championship game for a one loss each USC - Florida match up?
College football is the perfect game with an un-perfect ending every year. On a personal side note: The BCS has really hurt the American tradition of New Years Day Bowls. It's just not the same when two or three bowls are a few days to a week later.

Who can it be now?

So the common internet thoughts are that now that Kevin Newsome and The Beaver have verbally committed to Michigan, other top offensive guys will follow. The latest rumor is that Bryce McNeal is close to committing to Michigan. (some reports are that he already did but neither Rivals or Scouts is running with it, so that means he hasn't). McNeal is a 6'2", 175 pound receiver from Breck high school in Minnesota and is rank #70 in the most recent Rivals 100 and the #11 receiver.

As Kevin's Myspace page hinted that he was going to Michigan. McNeal's has the same hints, but we will wait and see when he makes his officially un-official verbal commitment to be a Wolverine.

Scout has come out with it's new rankings:

Kevin Newsome is now 5 stars!
Teric Jones is now 4 stars!
Fitzgerald Toussaint is now 3 stars
and Bell is still not rated.

Michigan now has two 5 star, three 4 stars, and one 3 star verbally committed recruits for next year .
