Lifelong Michigan fan Matt Godin today made his commitment public to the Wolverines' 2012 recruiting class. He had been a silent commit since the Michigan spring game.
Matt is a 6'5", 253-pound defensive line player, and the position he will play at U of M is still a bit of a mystery. He could play DE or DT. My vote would be for DT, but I will entrust Greg Mattison with that important decision.
Matt plays for Michigan HS football power Detroit Catholic Central out of Novi and happens to be close friends with Flint's 2012 defensive lineman Danny O'Brien. Matt is rated a 3-star prospect by Scouts and 4-star by 24/7 and had offers from Wisconsin, BC, MSU, Cincy, Duke, Vandy, Missouri and others.
Why he chose Michigan: "Because they are in my blood. I used to cry over games and I'm never going to get a better opportunity to come in early and contribute."
Love it!
I would expect Matt to redshirt year one while he works on his strength and technique. The recruiting sites that have seen him play think he is very athletic for a big man and has a great frame.
I really like this pickup for a number of reasons, including that he is an in-state kid, he loves Michigan and he plays a position of need for the Wolverines.
The wish list for the rest of class includes a couple of offensive linemen, a QB (less of a need with one in 2013), a highly rated RB, one WR, a couple DTs, one DE (named Chris Wormley) and some guys to play in the defensive backfield (CB and safety).

Wolverine Weekend Update: Michigan Double's Down on Two DE Commits
Michigan seems to recruiting 2 by 2 this year. I wish some of this news would break on Monday Night or Tuesday Morning, so I could use the headline Two for Tuesday.
So remember this week, when I mentioned that Michigan's DE recruiting would break in a similar way to Michigan's LB commitments? Well that title wave started on Saturday late afternoon.
First DE Commitment come from Instate DE prospect Mario Ojemudia who is a teammate of 2012 TE commit Devin Funchess. They have one more teammate that Michigan is interested in WR Aaron Burbridge but they have yet to offer and there is rumored to be some academic issues.
Mario is a 6'2 215 pound DT in high school but his size and speed is more suited for DE at the next level. Here is what Scout's Allen Trieu says about him:"Mario Ojemudia is quick off the ball, aggressive, and disruptive. The main knock on him is that he's about 215 pounds and has been playing out of position as a tackle. I think he will be fine at end, though, because he's so athletic.
Mario was rumored to be a strong Spartan lean early on in his recruitment but warmed to Michigan with every visit he took to Ann Arbor. He visited MSU last weekend and decided that East Lansing was no match to Ann Arbor and made up his mind to be a Wolverine.

This kid is very athletic and plays QB and DE in high school. There was some news out of Ohio that he prefers TE over DE at the next level but many agree after some weight and some extra time in the weight room that he best projects at DE.
Pharaoh has a 3 star grade from Scouts and 4 stars from 24/7. He has a ton of offers which include: NC, NC State, BC, Colorado, UConn, Cincy, Louisville, ASU, MSU, Nebraska, WVU, Pitt, Purdue, Illinois and many more.
Watch this video, this kid is a freak! You can do a ton of things with an athlete like this. How about on punt blocks or field goal blocks? Emergency QB? Love this kids upside!
What now at DE? There is still one prospect that the Wolverines would like to have at DE in this class and his name is Chris Wormley from Toledo who could be Ohio's best player. Chris grew up a Michigan fan but is considering the Wolverines and Buckeyes.
Needs Now? QB, DT, Offensive Line and WR seem to be the biggest needs for the 2012 class at this point. Michigan could get some good news on 5/12 when Matt Godin, DT announces his choice.

Michigan's Spring Game Deep Thoughts
The format of the scrimmage was pretty much what I expected. The coverage and technical problems by the Big Ten Network was far worse then I expected.
The wind was whipping with the cold weather made the play pretty sloppy at times. Neither QB did very well and completions seemed to be far and few in between. The only bad snap was when the center didn't get the ball back on the right count. I didn't see any injuries which is really good news and Michigan picked up a huge instate commitment from Royce Jenkins-Stone, so Saturday was a successful day.
Many of you seem very high on Cam Gordon and Big Will. They will be an important part of the defense next year. A couple of you picked Carvin Johnson and he was a very good choice as well. Lots of Fitz, Hopkins and Cox.

Today Michigan played it's Spring Game and I will get to that post Sunday morning. So tune in then.
The Big News from today is that Michigan has landed 2 four star linebackers in 2 days.
The first one on Friday night was not a surprise with the commitment of Kaleb Ringer, cousin of former MSU Spartan Javon Ringer. Kaleb will come to Ann Arbor as a 6'1 225 pound linebacker looking to make a difference on the Wolverine defense. Kaleb is a 4 star prospect to Scouts but not yet rated by Rivals or ESPN.
Kaleb's offer list includes Cincinnati, Syracuse, West Virgina, MAC Schools, Iowa and Illinois. Not a bad offer list for early in the recruiting process but some people might point out that he didn't have offers from Ohio State or Michigan State. OSU has a very limited scholarships this year and a bunch of other trouble to worry about and who knows why MSU didn't offer.
The book on this kid is he plays sideline to sideline as a run stopper. Maybe a guy that the Wolverines would take out on 3rd downs or traditional passing situations. Which I could care less, We could use a guy around Ann Arbor that can stuff the run!

LineBacker #2 is RJS! Royce Jenkins-Stone.
RJS is part of the Instate 3, a group of highly touted prospects with James Ross and Terry Richardson. Royce decided today that Michigan was the place for him. (No decisions yet for Ross or Richardson) RJS is still growing into his frame but right now is at 6'2 and 215 pounds. His offer list is an impressive one: Oklahoma, Florida, Alabama, Tenn, ASU, MSU, Miami, and so on. This guy is a big time prospect and a future Wolverine!
He comes from the Division 1 talent machine which is Cass Tech in Detroit coached by former Wolverine Thomas Wilcher. RJS had 90 tackles, 3 sacks and 5 picks last year as a junior. He also rushed for 10 touchdowns as a full back.
Royce is the first 2012 verbal commit that makes Wolverine fans that follow this stuff to say: Wow!
Let's hope there are more of those coming. Michigan is now in a strange position with two other LB's and probably only has 1 spot left. Both are 4 star guys as well. Joe Bolden from Cincinnati (who was up to Ann Arbor this week with his parents) and Detroit's James "Biggs" Ross. Would Michigan say no to one of them? Or would they take both? I say bring both to Ann Arbor if they want to be Wolverines!

Michigan Friday: Spring Game Wish List
I like the Michigan Spring Game, just because I really enjoy seeing the Maize and Blue on the field for another Saturday and know it's my last chance until September. I don't really love it because it's a glorified practice which can give us some insight on who and where your favorite players might be next year.
So if I was 6 years old and really wanted my wish list to come true on Saturday, here it is:
Enjoy the game and I will do my MVP on Sunday Morning. We just have 6 shirts so the first 6 with the right prediction will get them. I have received hundreds of emails.
Don't forget, Michigan should get a 4 star LB recruit tonight at 6:00 PM!

So if I was 6 years old and really wanted my wish list to come true on Saturday, here it is:
- No major injuries of any sort
- Denard looks comfortable under center
- Denard has some nice completions
- No fumbled snaps from anyone
- The recruits are impressed and want to commit on the spot
- The defense looks improved since the nightmare I had on 1/1/11
- A couple of running backs look like good options this fall
- Linebacker play is much improved with new players
- Another starting safety whose name doesn't rhyme with "throwbacks"
- WR's and TE's that catch the ball consistently (don't forget Michigan struggled with that last year)
- A couple made field goals
- A couple young DB's who show they can play
- A Big Day for Big Will! I want a QB pressure and a ton of stops of RB's for no gain or -2 yards.
- Devin to play with confidence and throw the ball well
- A 3rd String QB to stand out - Mr. President? The Pioneer kid?
- #1 wish: That the right building blocks are in place to make this a championship team in the next couple of year.

Wolverine Thursday: Spring Game Information
Coach Hoke sat down with the media yesterday and gave us some thoughts on the Spring Game on Saturday.
First off, the weather is supposed to be cold and rainy which is too bad because that probably will keep people way and donations for Mott's down. If your wondering, the game is still free but if do $5 and up donation to Mott's you will walk away with some cool Fat Head stuff or special access to game day activities next season.
Players that are out: JT Floyd, Troy Woolfolk, Taylor Lewan, and Kenny Demens. Those are all starters and each one is expected to be ready for Fall practice.
Match Ups: #1 Offense vs #2 Defense. #1 Defense vs #2 Offense. Winners get Steak for dinner - Losers get Hot Dogs.
"We're heading down the home stretch of spring, obviously. We've got two days left to keep evaluating." Mindset, mentality, etc. will still be evaluated in the final two days. "We've made some progress in some of those areas but we're a long way from being the football team we want to be in the fall."
I have heard there has been a ton of "coaching" going on for each player. Much more working on fundamentals then under the last staff. Which is exactly what this team needs. I am not expecting a ton out of the Spring Game, my hope is the players can work on what they learned in Spring over the summer months and really turn it up during Fall Practice.

- Here is some visit reaction from Joe Bolden's who was in town on Tuesady for his second visit to Ann Arbor with is Mom and Dad: I didn't see as much as I wanted to last time. This time we got to drive through campus, see the classrooms, and we just got to see a lot more than last time. We go the grand tour of everything. I didn't get to see a dorm because there weren't any vacant, but I got to see the building that I would be living in.----Timeline: I still haven't gotten the chance to sit down with my mother, father, and uncle and weigh out the pro's and con's of everything. My uncle wasn't at school today, but we'll probably sit down in the next couple days. I really don't have a timeline, it could happen tomorrow or it could happen in February. I'm not sure yet.

- 4 star LB from Ohio Kaleb Ringer is still planning to announce at 6:00 on Friday. Things look great for the Maize and Blue. The Dayton Daily News has already broken the story a couple days early. Why would they do that to a kid?
- 4 Star TE from Detroit Ron Thompson who many expected to announce his decision this week, has delayed his decision due to transferring to another high school.
- Cincinnati 4 Star LB Joe Bolden was in town with his parents on Tuesday. Joe has been saying he wouldn't make an early decision but now an early announcement seems likely. If Kaleb and Joe jump on board does that fast forward RJS and James Ross timeline? Michigan could use 4 LB's for sure, but that would be the max.

Michigan Tuesday: How I Hate Ohio State - Except When It Comes to Recruiting
Michigan and Ohio State Universities have a rivalry that only can be matched by Auburn vs Alabama in college football. (That entire tree killing thing, went way too far. Way too far). Rich Rodriguez sort of got it but he really didn't. Brady Hoke really gets it and won't use the word "State" when referring to that school in Columbus. This is something the team has adopted as well. During Spring Drills, "Beat Ohio" can be heard from inside the Glick Field House.
People in Ohio can't stand Michigan and even though the Wolverines haven't put a team on the field in the last 3 years they can't imagine losing to the Wolverines and having to live with that feeling for an entire year.
So why has Michigan been so good recruiting the State of Ohio?
The Wolverines last two Heisman Trophy winners, Desmond Howard and Charles Woodson are from Ohio. I remember a statement from former Michigan DB Markus Ray who visited OSU and saw a sign that said, "Beat Michigan" and thought to himself: "I want to go there". Ray was born and raised in Columbus, Ohio.
So how does a state that hates the State of Michigan so much send so much talent to Ann Arbor? Well it starts with Michigan coaches that were born in Ohio. You might have heard of Bo Schemblecler who was born in Barberton and Brady Hoke who was born in Dayton, Ohio.
People from Ohio trusted Bo and they seem to trust Brady Hoke as well. Even Ted Ginn, Sr. who seems to hate the Wolverines sent a player to Brady last year. Ted even sent his kids to play for Coach Hoke at Ball State as well. Michigan signed 7 players from Ohio in the 2011 class and already has one commit in 3 star OL Caleb Stacey from Cincinnati.
So what about this year? Who are we looking at from Ohio?

Recruiting will be a fun ride this year and like I mentioned yesterday Michigan could be set up for a huge year with a ton of talent.
Michigan Monday: Recruiting Whispers
The Michigan coaching staff got a late start to the 2012 recruiting class. When they started at Michigan they only had a couple of weeks to put together a 2011 class. How in the world would they be able to make up ground on the 2012 class when other programs had a 12 month start?
Well, it looks like they are starting to close that gap. Michigan has two offensive lineman committed already and is looking at some top prospects on both lines, a QB, linebackers, TE's, a FB and depth at the other positions. As we know, Michigan and Ohio are loaded with talent this year. Brady Hoke and Staff have already made a big impact on the high school coaches in Michigan and he grew up in Ohio, so he has connections in that State as well.
Here are some top prospects to keep your eye on:

Zeke is friends with incoming freshman Chris Barnett and Zeke has said he will recruit other top guys to the school he picks. He has been talking up Michigan lately. Keep an eye on Zeke's and his recruitment.
- Local TE Ron Thompson is now a 4 Star prospect on Scouts. He is expected to be a strong lean to Michigan. Could announce in the next week or two.
- Ohio MLB Kaleb Ringer who is making his announcement on 4/15 at 6:00 is also a 4 star on Scouts and is expected to put on a Navy Block M hat during his announcement.
- Other Scouts 4 star prospects that Michigan has a good shot at: Toledo's Chris Wormley, James Ross, Royce Jenkins-Stone, Terry Richardson, Chicago's Jordan Diamond.

- Information on recent A2 visitor and Cleveland offensive lineman Kyle Dobson from the Plain Dealer: During a recent unofficial visit to Michigan, Cleveland Heights coach Jeff Rotsky said Michigan coaches told him they wanted Dodson to be a cornerstone in what they hope will be a revived running game. Rotsky said Ohio State has offered a scholarship, pending Dodson clearing an academic hurdle. Dodson also has visited Alabama and Auburn and has summer trips planned to Penn State and Notre Dame. His other offers include Michigan State, Illinois, Wisconsin, West Virginia and Pittsburgh. Florida has expressed interest.

Michigan Thursday: Teaching vs Scheming
When you go to college you learn the knowledge and maybe a few skills to become a professional. No matter what your profession is; Lawyer, Doctor, Architect, Business Professional, etc. ............
The same goes with football players and at times I see a coaches that come from the NFL that don't understand that. My first example is Charlie Weiss, he talked about there wouldn't anyone out scheming him at ND. That was clear and so was his inability to be a college head football coach. In college you need to be able to see an all state running back that might be a step slow is a perfect linebacker prospect. In college you have to teach technique and football skills over drawing up complex plays. In the NFL, you have elite athletes and to win you need to out scheme your opponent.
What makes me excited about Michigan football is Greg Mattison gets it and I don't think Greg Robinson ever did. Yes, Mattison came from the NFL Ravens but his experience in college football way out weighs Robinson's. You can tell Mattison is a teacher in some of his comments yesterday when he met the press about Spring Practice:
On learning the new schemes: Even though installation is going slowly, "There is no disappointment whatsoever in me. I get excited and more enthused every day we meet." They get to mold the players into what they want to see, and the players are all excited to learn.
Talent and Technique: " There hasn't been any moping or negative attitudes, guys come in wanting to learn. When the coaches make corrections, the players demonstrate those by the next day. The entire D has tons of work to do on basic techniques. "But I would have said that about any time I've had, unless they're perfect with their technique, I'm not satisfied." First step, punch, etc. - all the basic techniques need work.
Big Will? Campbell is coming off the football better at times, but not always. Quinton Washington "has been neck and neck with [Will Campbell]... When you see Quinton Washington and Will Campbell battling for a position, that says 'great, because now we can roll them.' Because I believe in that, and I always have." Will Heininger has stepped up, and can rotate with Jake Ryan. Jibreel Black looks as good as Craig Roh on some days.
LB's? "The one guy probably that has improved the most and I have really become excited about him is Cam Gordon. I've really got high hopes for him." He's playing SAM backer, and has a chance to be good. "Has a tremendous attitude." He has safety athleticism, just need to get bigger. "Cam's a really long way away, but as a coach you see things in a young man you say 'this guy really could be one of those really good players some day.'" He's battling guys much bigger than him right now, and they want him to get as big as he can while still being able to run.
I know the proof will be on the field on Saturday's but it sounds like to me that Mattison is teaching the defense on how to be play their positions where Robinson used a stuffed Beaver to motive his players to be better.

At the end of the day you want your football coaches to be good leaders and teachers. This also maybe an area where RR could improve as well. He was known as a the mastermind behind the spread but could he really teach 18-22 years old kids on how to be better football players? His teams didn't get better during the season at Michigan, they got worse which makes me believe he was more of a scheme guy then a teacher. To quote Charles Barkley, "I could be wrong but I doubt it!".
Wolverine Wednesday: Talks About Practice and Contracts
Brady Hoke signed his new Michigan contract on Monday. He will make $2M this year and get regular bonuses that could increase his salary to an average of $3.5M a year over the 6 year term of the contract. Part of his bonus structure is a $1.5M "Stay Bonus" if he stays at Michigan after 3 years.
- Michigan's top QB prospect for the 2012 class Zeke Pike was on campus to visit with the coaches and watch practice on Tuesday. Here is what Zeke had to say: I think the coaches they have are the perfect coaches to get Michigan back to Michigan. I think Coach Hoke is doing a very good job with bringing tradition back. There was so much fire, intensity, and energy at practice. It just looks like there's a lot of competition on the field and you need that to be great. I think the right coaches are in place and that's exciting. I think it's a great opportunity to be that next guy at Michigan. It's a program on a national stage, when you say Michigan football people turn their heads. I'm excited to continue to build the relationships.

Michigan's football program held a junior day this past Saturday and it seemed to make an impression on a number of talented 2012 prospects that Michigan is after.

We watched practice first, went to lunch, and then they took us on a tour of the locker room and everything. I noticed in practice that the coaches are real patient and there's not a lot of yelling. It definitely helped me get a better understanding of how they coach and how they work. This visit definitely helped Michigan.
Chris would like to make his decision before his season starts but wants to be 100% comfortable and doesn't want his recruitment to be a distraction during the season. I like Michigan's chances here.

Super Saturday: Michigan Gets Two More Commitments
Michigan got it's first verbal commitment to the 2012 football class on Thursday. The Basketball Team also got it's last 2011-2012 scholarship filled on Friday when Max Bielfeldt hoped on board the Beilein train.
You would expect a boring day from both programs, right? Wrong.
Both picked up verbals again today.
Basketball:
Nik Stauskas joined Glenn Robinson III as the second commitment for Michigan's 2012 class. Nik is a 6'4 shooting guard that is rated 3 stars by pretty much every service but has a very nice offer list that includes Butler, Kansas, Iowa State, and Wake Forest.

- Darius Morris has decided to file for the NBA Draft but will not hire an agent. If he doesn't sign with an agent or sign an endorsement deal he can come back to Michigan. I think "the butterfly" could use one more year at least. Darius really improved his game this year, but still needs to work on his jump shooting skills. If he adds a "J" he will be a more complete NBA prospect.
- An update on Matt Godin's recruitment from Matt's brother: Just got off the phone with my dad, who is at EMU today with Matthew for a track meet. Tom Lemming is in Ann Arbor this weekend, and he made it out to EMU to meet my brother. Lemming told Matthew that he'll be recommending him for both the Army and UA All-American games. My dad also told me that he and Matthew are probably heading over to Ann Arbor after the track meet to visit with the coaches. Let's hope Matt is Michigan's 3rd commitment.
Michigan Tuesday: Had the #1 TV Game of the Weekend
The Michigan vs. Duke game was the most watched game of the the NCAA Tournament. Brand names and the Fab 5 hype this past week I am sure helped draw some viewers. This is another example that the Michigan program is heading in the right direction.

- This week and weekend will have a number of big time prospect on campus including highly rated QB Zeke Pike and Toledo DE Chris Wormley. TomVH has a big list of guys expected on campus and at practice.
Michigan Monday: Basketball and Football Recruiting Blitz
So Michigan is fresh off it's close loss to Duke and there is still one question left for the 2011 class. That person in question is Max Bielfeldt a 6'8 220 pound forward that is averaging 24 points a game, 5 blocks, and 12 boards. Max is down to Michigan and Illinois. Mentioned here last week, there are some questions remaining whether Illinois has a scholarship left for the young man, but he has a lot of family legacy there and might not need one anyway. Max is planning to announce his school of choice this week. I think it's a toss up for Max at this point, he probably has dreamed of playing for Illinois but Michigan is a "hot" young team that gives him a great shot at a ton of early playing time. I would say he probably understands that Michigan has an unlimited future with this young squad. I hope he goes Blue!

Michigan has a PG coming in next year named Trey Burke from Columbus and a shooting guard from Southfield Carlton Brundidge. If Max would join this class, I think it would be a pretty nice group to fill some of Michigan holes.

Michigan Friday: Recruiting Visit Blitz and Tressel Gate Gets Longer
I don't know how your NCAA Bracket looks but mine took a huge hit yesterday. I guess I should of worn more green. That's how March Madness works.
Did anyone notice that Jim Tressel has expanded his suspension from 2 games to 5 games and that the NCAA denied the appeal on the 5 game suspension for the players? Ohio State sure is acting fast instead of acting smart when it comes to this situation. A Yahoo Internet report is out for less then 24 hours and they jump to a press conference and suspend Jim for basically OSU's MAC season and then the NCAA says "are you kidding me?" regarding the players suspension and Jim extends his suspension 3 more games.
What will be interesting from here is if the NCAA will make his suspension even longer and will they have OSU vacate their wins from 2010? Either way it's clear OSU doesn't want to fire Tressel and it's getting even clearer they might not have a choice. Jim signing that NCAA document that he didn't have any knowledge of the situation will be his downfall. If you include the Youngstown State stuff this looks pretty bad for the Ohio State coach. If Tennessee's head coach lies to the NCAA about a player being at his home for a BBQ and now looks like will be fired. If he is let go, Jim doesn't have a chance since his crime is much worse.

Jim signing that NCAA document that he didn't have any knowledge of the situation will be his downfall. If you include the Youngstown State stuff this looks pretty bad for the Ohio State coach. If Tennessee's head coach lies to the NCAA about a player being at his home for a BBQ and now looks like will be fired. If he is let go, Jim doesn't have a chance since his crime is much worse.

Saturday is the start of Spring Practice for the Wolverines and of course the start of the Brady Hoke era. It will be interesting to hear "rumors" from practice on how things are different and who is having a great spring.

Let's not forget about today's basketball game at 12:40. No matter what happens today, I am very happy with what this team has accomplished this year. With Bruce Pearl hanging in the wind, I hope the Tennessee players will be distracted and decide not to show up to play. I hope Michigan can work the inside - outside game that they have been working the last 11 games or so. I look for Zack and Stu to hit some big 3's.
