Q Goes Blue!

The long awaited announcement of South Carolina's Offensive Tackle Quinton Washington will take place in a couple of hours. The early report is that Quinton has decided that the University of Michigan is the place for him.

As always, here are the particulars from the pro's at Varsity Blue:

Recruiting Notes:
Early in the recruiting process, it appeared to be highly likely that Washington would end up at one of the South Carolina schools. His coach, Art Craig, is well-connected within the state, and it seemed he might steer his top player to either the Cocks or Tigers. When his original top 5 came out in June, the Wolverines were listed… as #6. With Quinton not expecting to make a decision until after his senior year of football, however, the Wolverines had plenty of time to make up ground. Washington visited Michigan for the Wisconsin game, and witnessed the epic comeback in the Big House. On that visit, the Wolverine staff made sure Quinton knew they wanted him to suit up in maize-and-blue when he got to college. After that time, Michigan was never far from the top of Washington’s recruitment. Despite late pushes by Tennessee and Miami of Florida, the final decision came down to Michigan and South Carolina. Washington went with his heart and his head, picking the Wolverines.

Player Notes:
Washington was listed as a top-10 player in South Carolina’s low country before his senior season, and his high recruiting rankings would bear that out (he is a 4-star Guard to Rivals, a 3-star to Scout). Washington was honored for his skills not only by finishing as a finalist for the state’s Mr. Football award, but also by being selected to the Shrine Bowl, as well as the ESPNU/UnderArmour All-American Bowl. Washington’s game is strength, and he won the state Weightlifting Championship in the heavyweight division. Washington’s game will be improved by working a bit on his quickness in the zone scheme once he gets to college.

One down, 4-6 to go!

Signing Day Eve

It's the night before Signing Day and all through the house, not a single recruit was sleeping not even this "Big House" Mouse. The letters were hung on the refrigerator with care, In hopes that the NFL soon would be there; The 4 star recruits were all snug in their beds, while visions of Sportscenter danc'd in their heads.................

  • Sam, I'm Not: Sam Montgomery dropped the Wolverines and Clemson last night. He will choose between USC, North Carolina, LSU and Tennessee on signing day. Another school was dropped but Sam's family was not able to get in touch with them last night. So Sam will choose between 3. As an FYI, UNC is closing in on 30 commits. Not good for upperclassmen that don't get a lot of playing time.

  • Denard Robinson is a wanted man. Look at the list of coaches that visited him last week: On Tuesday, Meyer and Lane Kiffin showed up to make their pitch. From Wednesday through Thursday, Georgia coach Mark Richt, Auburn coach Gene Chizik and Central Florida coach George O'Leary visited. On Saturday, the entire Michigan offensive coaching staff showed up. Also from the article: Rodriguez has told Robinson he can be the next White, a speedy, all-purpose quarterback who starred for Rodriguez at West Virginia. Rodriguez has no one like White at Michigan, and he has made it clear that Robinson could start as a freshman. Here is what DRob's coach had to say about his choices: ''Can you imagine a freshman quarterback starting in The Big House,'' said Taylor, referring to Michigan's 100,000-seat stadium. " DRob will announce at 11:00 am on Wednesday.

  • QW: We thought we might have a decision from Quinton Washington yesterday or today, but now it looks like he will wait until Wednesday to announce at a 3:30 press conference. Q is down to Michigan and South Carolina.

  • News from an Illinois paper: Illinois appears a long shot for Je'Ron Stokes of Philadelphia. Stokes committed to Tennessee and now also considers Michigan and Georgia after a coaching change in Knoxville.

  • DQJ: One of Michigan's soft recruits DT DeQuinta Jones will announce tomorrow at 12:30. He reportedly will decide between Michigan, Arkansas, and Tennessee.

  • Sean Griffin (who?), Tim Jamison, Terrance Taylor, and Morgan Trent are all invited to the NFL Combine. Sean is a long snapper (I wonder if they make him run and do the Wonderlic test or does he just long snap all day?)

  • Opps!: Ohio State offensive lineman Alex Boone was arrested in California after being subdued with a Taser during an alleged drunken tirade, authorities said Monday. When they arrived, the 6-foot-8, 312-pound tackle had been jumping on car hoods, yanking on a tow truck cable and trying to break a window, said sheriff's spokesman Jim Amormino. Boone ran away from deputies and was found hiding underneath a patio, authorities said. Boone was combative and uncooperative and had to be taken down with a stun gun, Amormino said. "He was yelling obscenities at deputies and had a strong smell of alcohol," Amormino said. "His blood-alcohol level was at least three times the legal amount." I'm guessing this isn't the best way to prepare for the NFL draft. BTW: When your 6"8 312 I'm guessing hiding under a patio isn't the best place to hide. Maybe try a mountain or skyscraper next time, big fella.

Late Night Recruiting Update

  • No word on QW yet: Washington was supposed to meet with his coach Art Craig today at school but Washington did not come to school. "He's a confused young man right now," Craig said. "He's torn completely in half," between USC and Michigan. Craig said he and Washington are to meet Tuesday morning to discuss the situation.

  • From a Florida Gators Web site on Denard Robinson: IS THERE STILL A CHANCE? I don’t think this one is likely for Denard Robinson, but I have definitely been hearing some murmurs to suggest that Denard is a possibility in this class. Do I think it’s likely? ....
