"You have to be raised in Alabama to understand the feeling for Alabama and Auburn," Bowden said. "As a kid growing up all of my contacts, my father's contacts, were with Alabama people. Football seemed like it was always a part of my life."

Still is, of course, for the 77-year-old Hall of Famer in his 42nd season as a head coach, all but 10 at Florida State. Bowden has two national championships, several league titles, is the winningest coach in major college history and was part of the first father vs. son coaching matchup.

Yet, of the 96 teams Bowden has faced, never has he looked across the field and seen the Crimson uniforms of Alabama or looked in the stands and heard "Roll Tide." That opportunity, though, comes Saturday when, in his 487th game, Bowden's Seminoles meet Alabama in Jacksonville.
