University of Alabama fans who may have been wondering what kind of difference junior left tackle Andre Smith actually makes got a clear feel for it Saturday night.
With the All-American lineman watching on the sideline due to a sprained knee, and senior right guard Marlon Davis (hamstring) joining him from the second quarter on, offensive line woes reverberated throughout the Crimson Tide during its 20-6 victory at Bryant-Denny Stadium.
“So we kind of lost our continuity on the offensive line,” Tide coach Nick Saban said. “I think the guys are capable of playing a lot better.”
After Davis left the game, sophomore Brian Motley came in at left guard and sophomore David Ross, who made his first career start, slid from left guard to right guard.
With junior Mike Johnson having moved from left guard to left tackle last week after Smith’s injury, the Tide essentially had three offensive linemen in new spots.
Even from the start, the difference was sizable, especially when compared to last week’s impressive victory against Clemson in the Georgia Dome.
